Full Shot – Power Arm Position
I have been working on placing the arms in a more powerful position at address.
To do this I turn the inside of my elbows so that they face up and away from my body. The back of the elbows will point toward the hips. Also I want to bring them closer together.
This position helps to create a wider swing arc, promotes the proper folding of the back elbow and enhances a proper release at impact.
Caution: My experience with this tells me that you can take it too far. That is as you move your elbows closer together you will reach a point at which you begin to add tension to the hands and forearms. Tension is a swing killer. Avoid it at all cost. So work with it to reach that happy medium where there is no tension anywhere but the elbows are more in front of the body and closer together.
I have been using this set up position for awhile now. It is not yet a habit as I sometimes find myself forgetting it. However, when I do remember and have a decent swing (timing and sequence) then I hit some of the most impressive drives you could ever hope to see. My golf buddies are shocked at how far I can hit it, particularly the younger ones. Heck, I’ll be honest, I even impress myself when I get it right.
Last round I played I got it all on the par 4 6th hole. That drive carried 280 yards on a cold day where the air was heavy. It was beautiful to watch and straight as the proverbial arrow. Left me we a smooth 7-iron from about 138. I remember choking down just a bit (normal distance 150 yds) and moving the ball a bit forward to bring it in high. Hit down on that one nicely and landed it right at the pin. The ball rolled out to about 50 feet. Made par on one of the toughest holes on the course.
This tip is staying with me for sure. Try it, I think it will work well for you too.
