Golf – Saturday March 6th

Today I played with Mike, Roger and Ed. The others played in a “Blind Draw Tournament” held at our club. Didn’t think that I was playing close enough to my handicap to be a good partner. That is just the truth of the matter.

Our round was a strange collection of good holes and bad holes. Pars were hard to come by. Mike did have a birdie on the toughest hole on the course. I parred a couple of holes on the back.

Conditions: We had a cold wind blowing lightly most of the round.  The ground was still plenty moist from all the rain & snow we’ve had this winter. The grass both in the fairways and on the greens is still dormant. As a result the lies we experienced were less than plush and the greens were slick and fast.

Recap: Scored 96 today (51 back/45 front), same as last week. Certainly no progress there. Unless you account for the fact that the course was set up for a tournament. The tee boxes were back and the pins were in much tougher positions than normal. So scoring was more difficult. Played much better again on the back than the front nine. Still I need to make more progress on my  mental game a bit.

Highlights:

  1. Played well on the back. Excellent drive and second shot on the 12th ( my nemesis). I was positioned well for the approach shot, about 140 yds into the wind from the middle of the fairway.
  2. Chipping. Made several good short game shots today. Chips on 5, 6, 8, 11,13, 16, 17 & 18 all left me with makeable putts. That is all you can ask for, right?
  3. Made a bogey on #16 after an out of bounds tee shot. That was good scramblin’.

Lowlights:

  1. The swing. Today I never felt “in the groove” on any swing. Either my timing was off or my balance was off. I have not been able to play as much as I usually do since I am traveling on business a lot these past several months. I feel like I am just not playing enough now. Week before last I played 3 days in a row and was really beginning to feel the groove by that third round.
  2. Tee shot on #16 went was out of bounds. The tee boxes were positioned to the far right placing us behind the trees that protect the corner of the fairway. I was going for a fade on that tee shot, but I was too steep on the angle of attach and blocked it out high and right. That is unquestionably out of sight – out of bounds.

Summary: Another round of below standard golf. All four of us would say that. While we played well on one hole, we would just play ugly on the next.

The goal is to break 80 enough to reach a single digit handicap. I need a better, more consistent, repeatable golf swing.

I will continue to work on both the new set up position and the putting set up position until I am consistent with both. I am still determined and confident that I can soon begin to break 80 consistently enough to earn a single digit handicap.

Proper set up position for each shot including putts is the first step to a consistent, repeatable golf swing. After that good scoring is more about club selection and course management.

Are you working on a plan to reach your scoring target? What is it? I have a plan to break 80 this year. Stay tuned, I will post that plan here for your benefit.

Enjoy life. Play golf. Be happy.
